The Greatest Story Ever

"In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told." - Luke 2:1-20 niv

What makes this story so great it that it's real. God gave the greatest gift ever when he sent his son Jesus Christ. Now we have the opportunity to give away again this year. In the busyness of the season, don't forget what it's really all about and take advantage of every opportunity to share the gift of Jesus with others.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Hope

"We have lasting hope through the salvation we have in Christ ... Hope means that even when it looks like it's all over, it's not all over yet. That's why the Bible says we can rejoice even in our tribulations. God is working in our hard times to produce proven character and hope in us." - Dr. Tony Evans

Psalm 33:22 "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you." (NIV)

For millions of people, the Christmas season means nothing more than parties, gifts, decorations, and time off work. For Christians, however, this time of year is a happy reminder of the hope we have because of Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus came, God seemed distant, hidden in the Holy of Holies in the temple, accessible only to the high priest. Worshipers wondered whether their sacrifices were acceptable. They doubted their salvation.

Christ means hope—to the person out of work, to the struggling single mother, to the dying believer. Even if you're just slogging your way through the disappointments of life, if you have Jesus, you have hope. And he is not a false hope, a childish fairy tale that we wish will have a happy ending. When Christ rose from the dead, that ended the argument. Period. Our hope in him is solid and it is real.

Christmas is a renewal of that hope. It reconfirms it for us if our vision has grown dim. It was settled long ago, so we don't have to doubt any more. Jesus is the fulfillment of our hope, our deepest longings come true.

Count Your Blessings

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to the country of Haiti with several other pastors in the state. While there we had the opportunity to get a quick firsthand glance at the work of Convoy of Hope where they are feeding nearly 75,000 children per day.

On January 12, 2012 Haiti will celebrate the 2nd anniversary of one of the worst earthquakes in history and remember the day that changed their lives forever. We didn't have to look far to see devastation in all it's forms. The rubble of buildings and possessions were obvious, but just as real was the devastation to individual lives & families. Unemployment in Haiti is at 85%, a good paying job provides $150 per month, and most people are lucky if they have 1 meal per day. I'm proud that we've partnered with Convoy of Hope in the past to help provide hope for the future of Haiti and I look forward to making a more intentional commitment to them in the months to come.

Every time I visit third-world countries like this I always walk away with a sense of repentance and appreciation. Repentance for all the times I've complained about what I don't have and appreciation for what I've already been blessed with. If we allow ourselves to, we could spend all day making a list of what we want, haven't gotten, or things we feel we deserve. But we seldom take the time to equally count our blessings. We are blessed! I am blessed! God has richly blessed me, regardless of my bank balance or the status of my wishlist.

Let me challenge you to take 10 minutes this week and write down at least 25 blessings God has provided you with. Remember they aren't all going to be monetary. Then each day this week, review those blessings, add a few more and choose to thankful for all God's done for you!

Have a GREAT week!

Fruit Stand

Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds (fruit) and praise your Father in heaven....Matthew 5:16 niv

One of the things the Bible indicates will be a clear sign of our commitment to God will be our actions, deeds, works, or fruit. And while those words are often debated the principle is simple. If we claim to be Christians then the actions of our lives should prove it. In our culture, talk is cheap. But when someone puts their what they believe into action, it proves that their beliefs have made it into their heart.

As a Christian we often lose sight of the reason why God wants us to produce fruit in our lives. Why does he want us to produce
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? -Galatians 5:22-23 nlt Why is this so important to God? It's important because the fruit is for others! He wants our lives to serve as a walking billboard to how great God is. God has a plan. In John 12:32 he lets us in on it when Jesus says, "...as I am lifted up, I will attract everyone to me..." -Message Bible His "Plan A" is for every Christian to produce fruit so others will "taste and see that the Lord is good."-Psalm 34:8

So what should we do? We should set up a fruit stand! We should strive to allow our lives to produce as much fruit as possible. We should go out of our way to let others know just how wonderful our God is! Pick a spot; at work, at home, with family, or neighbors. Set up a fruit stand where people can experience who God really is!

The Power of a Thank You!

If there is a lost art in the world we live in today it's the art of appreciation and thanks. October has historically been classified as Pastor Appreciation Month. And on behalf of Tricia, myself, and all the pastors at Central Church we are so appreciative of your kind notes and gifts of thanks and encouragement. They are very special and especially encouraging.

But have you ever noticed how we've segregated appreciation & thanks into scheduled and brief moments of life. On birthdays we'll include the kind words or a card to those who are part of our lives. On wedding anniversaries we tell our significant other how much they mean to us and that we love and appreciate them. At Christmas time we'll express our love and thanks to our kids, family, or close friends by purchasing them a gift. Even the idea of Pastor Appreciation Day or Month is somewhat funny because I would have to admit that I would love to feel appreciated more than 1, 2, or 30 days per year.

I had a moment with a friend just he other day where I forced him to look me in the eye as I told him how much I appreciated what he had been doing for me. He mentioned to me later how much that meant to him. Not just that I said the random "thank you" but that I took the time to look him in the eye and really mean it.

I think we've lost the soul nourishing art of giving simple yet intentional appreciation and thanks. When was the last time we went beyond the sometimes meaningless phrase of "thanks" as you walked away, and instead you stopped for another 10 seconds and really told someone who much you appreciated them? How about with your spouse, your kids, your parents, your boss, or even your enemy? The seed of appreciation sown at the right times could prove to increase your life and the lives of others you are around. It's so simple. This week, take the time to verbally show your true appreciation to someone who deserves it.

Have a GREAT week!

5 Years & Counting

It's hard to believe but this weekend was our 5 year anniversary as the lead pastors at Central Church. When we accepted this position we were excited about the opportunity to move to the city of Green Bay and join hands with those who have made Central great for years. We believed that God was positioning us in this leadership position for a very significant & specific purpose; to reach this city with the gospel and hope of Jesus Christ.

In big and small ways we've begun that over the past 5 years. Many have stepped out of their comfort zones, made commitments to one another, and made the decision to invest their lives in the purposes and the plans of God. Tricia and I have found ourselves inspired, humbled, and challenged by your commitment & passion for God.

Now let's get primed for the next 5 years. We can't change the past but we can change the future. Our work together, along with the favor & blessing of God, has the potential of eternally changing your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and ultimately this city. It's not time to sit back and watch, it's time to jump up and get involved. Where are you currently serving others, investing your life, and giving of yourself? What are you doing today that will help you grow in your faith and walk with God? 5 years ago, our family moved here; we are all in! We left everything and everyone we knew to answer the call of God. Are you willing to answer the call of God right here where you are?

We're excited about this 5 year milestone, but we're even more excited about the years to come!

Lesson Learned

I wouldn't classify myself as a great student as a kid. I had the aptitude to get straight A's but often settled into the high C, low B category. There were many lessons that I didn't take full advantage of that I now wish I had taken more to heart.

I think most of us forget that the lesson's don't end after high school or even college graduation. There are still lessons to be learned, principles to apply, and a lot of action that should follow. It's our ability to recognize the lessons that life, and more likely God, is trying to teach us. God's lessons are everywhere. They can be found in friendships, marriage, work, school, and everything in between. These lessons don't end because you reach a certain age or financial status. They are always there. The question we need to ask ourselves is, "Will I learn?"

All through the Bible people faced new challenges from mountain tops to valleys. But in each circumstance God was trying to teach them something. Something about himself or something about themselves. For the Israelites the journey out of Egypt to the promised land of God was intended to position them to trust God. The journey included things like enemy attack, food shortage, lack of proper housing, and an overall sense of unrest and discontent. But there was a lesson to be learned. Would they trust God? I think it's still the #1 lesson God is trying to teach us today.

Have you learned the lesson? This isn't one that any of us should fail. Whatever has been going wrong, whatever you've been stressed or worried about, whatever you've been questioning in your life; trust God! It's not blind faith! He's never failed. We can trust him. Learn the lesson.

Start Digging

"This is what the LORD says: Make this valley full of ditches." - 2 Kings 3:16 niv

When I was growing up 45 miles south of St. Louis my dad often had a few cows & pigs for the meat and a small garden even though I wouldn't classify it as farming. I have a great deal of respect for those who make their living from the process of farming. When we think about farming it's most often about the harvest. It's when we drive by those fields that where the corn stalks are 6 feet tall that we even recognize that someone has been tending that field.

If there have ever been people of faith, it's farmers. Because they know that the end result of their work starts long before their season of harvest. It began during the winter season when everything died and the ground replenished. The harvest is dependent upon the season of preparation, the season of nurturing, and then the harvest comes. I've never met a farmer yet who believe they could expect a harvest without first doing the hard work before. Harvest is impossible without first sowing the seed.

That's what God was saying through the prophet Elisha in 2 Kings 3:16. God said, "Dig a ditch! THEN watch me fill it up!" What area of your life do you need God to produce a harvest in? What issue are you facing that will never be resolved with out the intervention of God? DIG A DITCH!
Only God can make it rain, but you can dig a ditch! Give God a place to fill up with his blessing, wisdom, provision, and power!

Have a GREAT day!

The Land Between

I know this about the land between, you've either been there, are there, or will be there. It's an inevitable place in life we each pass through. That place between where we were and were we know God is taking us. The adventure is exciting at first, but soon we realize the journey will be longer and more intense than we imagined. But it's in the journey that we experience transformational growth. The land between is the most fertile soil for this type of growth.

Think back at the toughest times of your life. What did you learn in those moments that has guided you in the years since? What experiences or principles were found in the midst of those hardships? Now, think about those times when things were seemingly perfect. Did you really learn anything or were you just coasting along selfishly focusing on yourself and your pursuits? God leads us through the land between so that we can mature, grow, and learn to trust him more.

If you've found yourself in the land between, I pray that God will sustain and train you. His goal is to develop in you the ability to look beyond your situations and learn to wholeheartedly trust him.

Stop The Noise

It's August 15th and I'm returning from my "unplugged" status of the past 14 days. I've heard of the severe withdrawals people go through when coming off drug & alcohol addictions. I'm not sure my process has been nearly that severe but I must admit, stopping the noise in my life has proven to be harder than most would think. The noise is everywhere; life has become so noisy that it often drowns out the voice of God.

What happens when you stop the noise? Well, I played games with the kids, went for more walks with my wife, read an entire book in 7 days (big deal for me), completed the New Testament for my second time this year, and most importantly I heard God speaking more clearly than before. It's not like he ever stopped speaking, it's just that God's volume level stays the same while the noise of life seems to get louder and louder.

This experience has enlightened us to some permanent changes we need to make to ensure that the noise level doesn't get that high again. TV, movies, music, internet, and social media are all good things, but I'm looking for the great things of God. Does that mean I'm quitting cold turkey? No. But it does mean that I'm putting limits & boundaries on these things. I am deciding to turn my ear to those things which are most important; God, wife, kids, etc. (in that order). When life stinks, CSI isn't going to help me. If I need advice, Survivor isn't going to give it to me.

Let me encourage you, stop some of the noise in your life and watch how you begin to hear the gentle voice of God more clearly in your life.

Have a GREAT week!

(Our family will be gone the next few weeks on vacation. We appreciate your prayers!)

Unplugged

In some ways I feel like the past 12 years of my life has been a progressive process of getting more and more connected. First it was the internet in general, then email, and now social media avenues like Facebook & Twitter. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing about these things that makes them wrong in and of themselves. But at some point we can get over connected.

For the next 14 days I've decided to unplug. While also fasting during this time I've decided to disconnect from some of my most time consuming electronic disruptions. While I have to use a computer and internet to work be productive, over these 14 days I'm taking a break from TV, Twitter; and yes, even Facebook! Again, nothing wrong with these things, but in unplugging I want to see what I've really been missing. Plus, anytime you set aside with God is always fruitful.

Take the journey with me if you dare. Pick up a book, have a conversation, play a game, spend time with your family/kids, or even talk to your neighbor.

See you again on August 15th! Have a GREAT week!

Steps To Sexual Purity

Is sexual purity still possible? Yes!!! It simply requires us to abandon our rules about sex and embrace the biblical guidelines God established. Instead of shying away from the topic or the discussion of it, we need to be upfront and open. According to God's Word, sex is both a biblical & natural thing. It's not something to be ashamed of or to be marginalized to closed door discussions. It's when we refuse to discuss it that we also hinder ourselves from finding freedom from sexual situations that are commonly affecting us in negative ways.

Where are you struggling in the pursuit of sexual purity? Is it pornography, tv & movies, internet content, or unhealthy emotional connections? Wherever you find yourself, you can find freedom from the things that would love to keep you bound up. The place to begin is by asking God to help you. Resist your enemy and he MUST leave! Second, talk to someone else; a friend or pastor. You need someone to fight this battle with you and to hold you accountable. Third, there are some great resources that can help you better understand the battles you are facing and how to fight back with biblical principles. Visit www.centralchurchgb.com for a list of inexpensive resources you can buy to encourage and challenge you.

You can do this! Sexual purity is absolutely possible. Don't do this alone!

Have a GREAT week!

Religion & Politics-No Separation

To listen to Pastor Aaron's message "Should Religion & Politics Mix?" visit www.centralchurchgb.com.

No matter how hard we may try, this idea of separating church & state just isn't Biblical. Christians should never consider separating their political views from the biblical morals and values of scripture. Those morals and values should be at the core of who we are not only on Sunday but also on election day.

This isn't about a specific party, candidate, or even economic situation. No church should tell you who to vote for; they shouldn't even have too. The convictions of God's Word should give every believer a clear understanding of who to select in a voting booth. Are leaders perfect? No. Are all leaders godly? No. But as Christians we've been called to elect officials who most closely align themselves with the principles of scripture.

There has never been and will never be the perfect candidate for any office. But our biblical mandate is to OBEY our elected leaders because their authority has been established by God. (Romans 13:1). The only time the Bible gives us permission to go against their authority is when the rule of law clearly goes against God's Word. It's also our mandate to PRAY. If Christians would simply take the time they spend complaining about government and use it to pray for government leaders, at minimum, it would at least change our focus and redirect our attitudes. We're also mandated to STAY. Stay involved with the system. Don't abdicate your responsibility to be aware, research issues and candidates, and most importantly go to the polls and cast a vote for Godly principles and values.

Is our government perfect? Absolutely not. But it's still the best thing this planet has to offer and we are blessed to be called Americans. Let's stand for truth in biblical ways and believe for God to intervene on our behalf as we stand for truth.

Accepted, Secure, & Significant

It is the struggle of all struggles. Who am I? What defines me? The essence of these questions finds it's foundations in our identity and value. So many people, both men & women, struggle with this. We crave acceptance, no matter the cost. We want to be secure in something; job, family, public status, or something. And we want our lives to be significant. We want it to count for something.

If we're not careful we can make it the focus of our lives and in doing so we can ultimately get way off track as it relates to God's plans for our lives. Just like that old song says "Looking for love in all the wrong places..." we can find ourselves trying to fill the void in our hearts and lives with things instead of the person of Jesus Christ. And where we tend to end up is in a place where we've tried to please everyone to get what we need, only to find out we're still empty and no better off.

We really do look for acceptance, security, and significance in a
ll the wrong places. Those things can't be found in a bottle, in a relationship, with the perfect body, or with a bigger paycheck. Those things can only be found in Jesus Christ. He already accepts you (Romans 15:7), you are already secure in Him (Romans 8:35), and you were created for significance (John 15:16). Just believe it! Receive it! Start living it!!! Stop looking everywhere else and start walking in the unfailing love, acceptance, security, and purpose of God!

Have a GREAT week!

The Name, the Cross, the Blood

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.- 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (niv)

If we aren't in a war, why does the Bible talk so much about it? If we aren't suppose to be part of this fight, why did God give us armor? If we are just supposed to lay down and get run over by our enemy, why are we commanded to engage our enemy in battle? Why? Because it was always Gods plan for his church, his redeemed, his children to pick up the weapons he's provided and go to war; a war that's already been won on the cross of Calvary. It's not more spiritual to stay on the sidelines and deny the war exists. Prayer? Yes. Frozen in fear? NO! God intended for us to get in the game, obey 1 Peter 5:9 & James 4:7, and resist our enemy. Resistance not denial.

You can win the battles you are facing on a daily basis. All you need to do is take up the weapons God's provided, attack your spiritual enemy, and hack him up.

I encourage you to take advantage of some great resources that we've provided on the Central Church website. At minimum, I encourage everyone to order the audio cd's "A Battle To Fight" (men), or "Finding Freedom" (w
omen). These great audio teachings from John & Staci Eldredge will prove to be great insight into the devils tactics and how you can defeat him. I've also made available some books that will be a great read, including "The Beginners Guide To Spiritual Warfare." Reprogram your brain so your mind can respond to the attacks!

Have a GREAT week!

The End Is STILL Near

It appears that 89-year-old radio preacher, Harold Camping, wasn't accurate on his mathematical equation of the end of the world. On Sunday, a representative said Camping was "somewhat bewildered and mystified". As a Christian, pastor, and more importantly, a person who reads the Bible I find it odd that Camping would be either bewildered or mystified. His predictions went in the face of Biblical truth that gives specific signs of the times that must happen first (& not all of them have yet) as well as the verses that declare that no one will know the day and hour as well as the rapture being at at time we wouldn't expect. At some point, Camping must have ignored the loving correction & accountability of many other prominent pastors & Christian leaders. Ultimately this can be added to the list of "Ridiculous Christian Moments" where even those of us who never believed or agreed with the prediction get lumped in with those who are more false prophet than Christian. (For more info on Harold Camping, his organization, and his lucrative financial empire please click this link.)

But regardless of this debunk prediction let me make be clear; the end is STILL near! We will never know the day, the hour, or the moment it will happen. But scripture is clear, Jesus is still coming back for his church. The Bible gives us some important signs that declare we are closer today than ever before to the rapture of the church. Take advantage of this embarrassing situation and turn it around for great discussion with those who are looking for REAL answers.

Have a GREAT day!

ALL Things Work Together

"....all things work together for good to those who love God...." Romans 8:28 (nasb)

One day while driving God brought this verse to my mind. It's not uncommon for me to have verses pop in my mind but the effect of this one disturbed me to my core. I think we would all like to think that at some measure or another we are somewhat aware of what God is up to in our life, job, health, relationships, etc. And while we can often see the effects of God, we seldom see the whole picture he is creating. What we would consider our vast knowledge is really just one pieces of the picture, one puzzle piece in a masterpiece that only the master can really see.

I've often known that God was doing things in my life behind the scenes that I didn't know about. But I always thought they were good things, things I would approve of. To be clear God doesn't make bad things happen to us, but he most certainly does allow the real struggles, pressures, and effects of this sinful world to affect us temporarily. There is one word in particular in this verse that disturbed me most; the world "all". God is using "all things" to work together for my good. Not only the positive things but also the negative. He's even using those things that I whine about the most. God merging both the good and the bad in my life to produce in me something more beautiful that I could have ever imagined.

It was in those few minutes in the car that I began doing something I've never done before. I began thanking God for all my problems. Prior to that day I don't think I've ever thanked him for anything except my blessings. But when I began to realize that he was also using my problems to mold, shape, refine, and prepare me I began to see a few more pieces of the picture than I ever had before. God is using ALL THINGS, everything in my life, with the end goal of using them all for my good. Stop complaining about "those things" and start praising God for "all things".

A House Of Prayer

My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations... Mark 11:17 (nlt)

Three times, in Matthew, Mark, & Luke, Jesus made the statement we read above. Three times he emphasized what the atmosphere of his house was supposed to be. Jesus didn't just make this statement simply to inform people, but also to correct what was an obvious problem in his day and ours as well. Name everything that happens at your local church. Adult, youth, and kids services, support groups, meetings, classes, activities, and yes, even prayer slips in there sometimes. I heard one person say, "You can have a concert at the church and pack the place out, but offer a prayer service and you're lucky to get 10 people. People will come for an artist, but Jesus can't draw a crowd!"

Unfortunately, this is more true than most of us would like to admit, not only in America in general but in our local churches specifically. It's amazing just how intentional we are to get to work, family functions, and personal appointments but God can't get on our calendar even for a few hours per week outside of our "semi-regular commitment" to a weekend service. My fear isn't so much the lack of prayer, but my greater fear is that we think everything is OK. We are very quickly turning into the Christians mentioned in 2 Timothy 3.
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. - 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (niv - emphasis mine)
What is the solution to this ungodly description? How do we stop being the great fakes and become authentic believers with salvation AND power? I believe it begins with a renewed commitment to prayer. At first it may only be scheduled and routine. Prayer is the LAST thing the devil wants you to do. That's why it's always so hard. He will do everything possible to keep you from it. But when you get reconnected to the source you will experience the power your life has been missing and so desperately needing.

Turn off the radio in the car and pray. At least then you know you will have 2 opportunities per day (plus it may keep your road rage to a minimum). Join us on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. for worship & prayer in the sanctuary at Central. Corporate prayer can be powerful & effective. Doing nothing won't help. Schedule time with God today and watch things begin to turn around.

Many Parts, One Body

1 Corinthians 12:12 .....many parts make up one whole body. (nlt)

The human body is an amazing thing. More complex than we often realize and more potential than we ever utilize. It's not coincidence that the Apostle Paul used the human body and an example of what the modern day church was supposed to resemble. The church is also a complex organization of parts as well. Each part was intended to be depended upon as well as dependable to the rest of the body. For many church has become that thing they do on a Sunday morning for 60 minutes, but it was intended to be so much more than that.

It was intended to become part of our daily lives. The interaction with other believers, accountability, and support are elemental not only to being Christians but also to being human. We need one another. If our heart decided to take a day off not only would it hurt the body, it would kill the body. If your kidney's decided to quit the entire body would suffer. On their own, they can't survive, but without them neither can the remainder of the body.

God knew something about us; and he should since he created us. God knew we needed each other. He designed us not only with a need for a savior but also a need to connect with others who have been saved as well. His goal wasn't to separate us from the rest of the world, but to use us together to show the rest of the world God's love as well. Every person has a part to play. Whether big or small; every part is vital and important.

What Is A Chreaster?

The Easter holiday is just around the corner and families will share in a dinner of carrots, colorful hard-boiled eggs, and delicious stuffed rabbit........no wait, maybe not! Poor Easter bunny never gets any respect. Even this great shot from the unmistakable movie The Christmas Story somehow took it's cheap shot at the "wascally wabbit"!

Christmas & Easter are the two holiday's that draw the most attention to Jesus birth, life, death, and resurrection than any other time of the year. Now is the best time ever to hunt yourself a chreaster! What is a chreaster? It's someone who only attends church two times per year; Christmas & Easter. Chreasters can look like grandparents, neighbors, coworkers, or ever the ordinary stranger. But regardless they are still more receptive to the gospel message around this time of year than any other time.

This Easter why not step out and encourage someone you care about to join you for an Easter service. Pastor Aaron joked yesterday, the church isn't just open on 2 Sunday's a year and closed the other 50. Christ has risen! He is alive and well! Our doors are open weekly for people to encounter him in a new and amazing way. Take advantage of this openly religious holiday and reach out to someone who needs to know the true eternal meaning of Easter!

Have a GREAT week!

Next Steps.....Here We Go!

Today Central took a huge step toward the plans of God as we launched our Next Steps vision expansion campaign. As the byline says it's an intentional step of faith that will allow us to renovate, revive, and reach out. For nearly 53 years Central has been a positive influence on the greater Green Bay area and after today we can proudly say the next 53 years will be even greater.

I am proud of everyone who calls Central Church their regular church home. Your willingness to dream, listen to God, and obey his instruction is inspiring. Only time will tell just how significant our commitment today will truly be. But one thing is for sure, we are moving forward. We will not stall out, stay put, or dream small! We are boldly moving forward and with God's help, nothing can stop us. If God is for us, who can be against us!

And so.......here we go! I can't wait to see all that God will do and to hear all the testimonies of God's faithfulness in the weeks, months, and years to come!

Have a GREAT week!

Weep With Those Who Weep

On Sunday I shared about a local friend and pastor who was informed on Saturday that his 22 year-old son lost his life serving our country in Afghanistan. When I heard the news I was very deeply moved and felt a sincere compassion for them, their other two children, and all of their extended family and friends. Romans 12:15 says, "weep with those who weep." It's a verse that I've remembered many times before when consoling a family after the loss of a loved one. Words just don't come easy in those times of grief. Often the best comfort I offer is to cry with them, love them, and simply be there for them.

Perspective is an amazing thing. One moment we can view our lives as happy, blessed, and good. And a few moments later we're depressed, discouraged, and ready to quit. Yesterday I talked about how regularly looking up to God in prayer clears our perspective. Our view is bad. God's view is much more clear and accurate. I've learned in life that the more time I spend focusing on my problem, the greater my problem seems. I've also learned the that the more time I spend focusing on God, the smaller my problems seems compared to the greatness of God. In most cases, my problems doesn't change at all but the way I view it does.

As you approach this week I'd like to challenge you to do a few things.
  • Look Up to God in prayer more often than you usually do. You need it!
  • Keep things in perspective. Don't let minor things become major.
  • Be THANKFUL! Recognize just how blessed you are! Choose to focus on the good in your life. Do you get to hug your loved ones tonight? You are richly blessed!
I would also ask you to remember Pastor Ron & Debbie Ross in your prayers this week and in weeks to come as they mourn the loss of their son.

Have a GREAT week!

I Believe.....

Regardless of the topic or the discussion a common phrase I hear at the beginning of most sentences is, "I believe....", then you will hear the person's opinion about a specific topic. In Wisconsin that opinion has centered most recently on the Budget Repair Bill; and the opinions are strong. Worldwide the opinion is focused on the tragedy in Japan. And our prayers go out to those affected. In the Christian world the most recent focus has been centered on a book written by a prominent pastor that is presumed to promote the theology of universalism. Part of the universalism teaching is that a loving God would never send someone to hell, if in fact hell actually exists. And the articles, attacks, etc. has ensued. Right? Wrong? I don't know haven't read the book and wouldn't want to make that judgment until I had.

My greater concern is the number of people I hear making statements that begin with "I Believe...", but when asked they can't tell you the foundation upon which they are establishing their beliefs. Typically it's either strictly based on their personal opinion or it's founded in some Biblical truth or fact but they can't substantiate their beliefs. Let me be clear, just because "you believe" something doesn't make it accurate or morally right. Especially if it contradicts the ultimate measure of wrong & right; the Bible. Before we give our opinions about how what someone's beliefs are wrong, why not begin by first solidifying what we believe first. Instead of standing against everything (which at times it is necessary to stand against something) why not start by declaring what you stand for! For me, here is my starting point; my declaration of what I firmly believe in, as supported by God's Word.

I BELIEVE.......
  • The Bible is the divine, infallible, inspired Word of God.
  • In the Trinity of God (Father, Son, & Holy Spirit).
  • Jesus Christ is the literal Son of God born of a virgin.
  • Every person is born with a sinful nature and in need of a Savior.
  • Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone and he paid the price of our sins on the cross.
  • In a literal heaven prepared for those who have accepted Christ & a literal hell for those who have rejected Christ.
This I believe! Why? Because the Bible says every one of these statements are true and statement #1 means I must believe it as well. Before we declare our beliefs about marginal things, we should first know what foundation our faith is built upon. I encourage every Christian to stand on what God's Word believes first and then compare your opinions to the truth of God's before you share them with others. Don't position yourself to believe something that God's Word does not.

God Meant It For Good

You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result. Genesis 50:20 (NASB)

Joseph’s life was anything but peaceful. He was sold into slavery by jealous brothers and thrown into prison on false charges. Yet, he remained free of bitterness or regret and saw God as the “Great Engineer” behind even the worst of circumstances.

In a final confrontation with his brothers, he graciously noted, “You meant it for bad; God meant it for good.”

“God meant it for good” says:

You can accept the past.
No sin, no action, no choice on your part is too big for God to handle or too big to be worked out for good (Romans 8:28). Just ask Joseph! Better yet, ask his brothers who ended up relying on him for their survival.

You can embrace the present.
There’s no need to play the “what if” game. The past is forgiven and gone, and the future is in God’s omnipotent hands; so you’re free to focus on the present: “Wherever you are, be all there,” says Jim Elliot. God wants you in the present because that’s where his grace will flow.

You can look expectantly toward the future.
Even if you make mistakes today, God still controls your future. Walking in the Spirit, you can live life to the fullest, without fear of making mistakes that take you out of God’s control. Even when things appear to be terrible, you can trust that God is still working out his divine plan for your life.

Tithe Sunday Challenge :: Update!

I wanted to share an exciting update for everyone regarding our Tithe Sunday Challenge.

YTD Weekly Tithe Average: $ 8,167
Tithe Sunday Challenge: $15,638

PRAISE THE LORD!!! I'm excited to see how everyone's faithfulness has proven to be amazing. So here's something to think about. What would happen if everyone was faithful with the blessing of God in our lives and committed to tithe regularly and consistently? Because we aren't just talking about money; we're talking about lives that would be changed. Every dollar invested in God's Kingdom is ultimately attached to reaching someone without God, providing discipleship, and releasing them to reach others. It's walked out every week in our ministries to kids & youth, in the planned outreach events, through small group discipleship, by helping those in need, and caring for others.

Even though stewardship involves money that's not what it's all about! It's about people. It's about lives that matter to God. It's about obedience to God's plan and the promised blessing of God. I've already heard several testimonies of how God has ALREADY proven faithful this past week as people were obedient to step out and give faithfully. I look forward to hearing more as God proves himself in your life as well.

Let's keep on stepping out in obedience and faith. Just watch what God is going to do!!!!

Pastor Mark

Take God At His Word

A devotional by Buddy Owens, teaching pastor at Saddleback Church.

“I am convinced that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it through to completion” (Philippians 1:6 GWT).

Lasting change doesn’t start with you. It starts with God. And it all begins when you say, “Yes Lord, I’m taking you at your word.” God isn’t asking you to make a promise that you can’t keep. He is asking you to receive a promise that only he can keep.

When you confess your faith, you are receiving God’s promises into your life, and he always keeps his promises. When you confess your faith, you are taking God at his Word, and you can!
  • He loves you – you have his Word on it (John 3:16).
  • You are forgiven – you have his Word on it (Psalm 103:3).
  • You belong to him – you have his Word on it (Romans 1:6).
  • He will never leave you or give up on you – you have his Word on it (Hebrews 13:5).
  • He will meet your needs – you have his Word on it (Philippians 4:19).
  • He has a plan and a purpose for your life – you have his Word on it (Jeremiah 29:11).
As you build your life on the Word of God, he will truly make you into a new person – a total makeover from the inside out. And what God starts, he will finish.

Your responsibility is to confess it. Let it renovate your life. “Be made new in the attitude of your minds.” But let me warn you: expect to be challenged. The Devil doesn’t want you to be free, so he will whisper old lies to you. He’ll try to discourage you and accuse you. He will bring up your past to haunt and harass you. But, as Greg Laurie says, “Whenever the Devil tries to remind you of your past, remind him of his future.” And start confessing your faith.

What lies do you still believe? What is keeping you from walking in the freedom and joy of the Lord? Start declaring the truth of the God’s Word and then act on that truth.

And that will truly make a new you.

Big Win...Bigger Wins!

I certainly consider myself a football fan in general and a Packer fan specifically. Everyone around Green Bay is in a state of euphoria about the Packers win last night against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV (that's 45 for those of you who are confused by roman numerals like me). Where I watched the game I saw people jump, shout, clap, run around, and almost pass out at times. The energy was high and the passion ran deep. It was a great win for a city still divided about whether they would wear a jersey with a 4 or 12 on it (either is fine). It was a Big Win!

I've joked with a few people this morning because I've heard people saying, "We won the Super Bowl!" My question has been, "If WE won the Super Bowl, where is my ring and when is the check coming?" Nobody has been able to give me a date yet. (ha.ha.) In last night's game, I never stepped onto the field once. I never threw a pass, covered a receiver, or scored a touchdown. My greatest contribution was making several trips to the food table. Aside from my occasional cheering and armchair quarterbacking I didn't contribute much to the big win.

But for me and for you there are Bigger Wins! Bigger than the Super Bowl and bigger than the Lombardi trophy. James 1:12 says, "
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." In a world full of awards there is only one that I'm striving for; the crown of life! It is our persistence through trials and struggles, our determination to be a Godly spouse, parents, and individuals that earns us this win. Is it easy; no! Is it worth it; yes!

Celebrate Green Bay! Celebrate a Big Win! But also remember that there are BIGGER WINS to be had today in your everyday attitudes, decisions, and obedience to God.

Have a GREAT day!

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello!

I once heard someone say, "The only constant in life is change!" How true that is. Central is in a season of change right now. This week will be Pastor Tim & Misty's last week with us as our Worship Pastors. They joined the Central Team in November of 2007. They were the first full-time Worship Pastors Central has ever had in it's nearly 53 year history. Over the past 3 years they've progressively improved every aspect of of our worship, media, and technology ministries. They accepted a new position at Twin Rivers Church in Cooper City, Florida. We will miss them as they leave, but we also bless them as they step forward into God's fresh plans for their lives. Please don't miss the opportunity to express your personal thanks to them this Friday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. as we host a reception for them in the Youth Room.

This season of change has also brought us our new Children's Pastors, Paul & Shelby Anglemyer. They just made the big move from Rapid City, South Dakota last week and are getting settle into their home in Green Bay. Along with their two children, Alyssa & Adrian, they come to Green Bay with 18+ years of children's ministry experience and are poised to lead Central's kids ministry to the next level. We are very excited to have them on Central's leadership team and we are looking forward to great things in our kids ministry in years to come.

So as we transition, keep Pastor Tim, Misty, & Gavin in prayer as they are in this exciting moving process. And as you do, also remember to pray as we search for our next worship pastor. Also keep the Anglemyers in your prayers as they get settle in and get things established for tremendous ministry. The future looks bright at Central Church as we take our Next Steps toward God's plans for our church and our city.

Have a GREAT week!

Excited to Serve

It's the morning after the NFC Championship game and the Packers walked away victorious! All around Green Bay you can sense the excitement and energy of the Pack heading to the Super Bowl. I even had a few people open the door for me at various places today. Who knew that going to the Super Bowl would make people nice (ha.ha.) I can't imagine how everyone is going to be over the next two weeks between now and the big game.

Just a thought......when was the last time you were equally excited to serve someone else with no strings attached? I'm excited about the Packers moving forward but I'm even more excited about what God wants to do in and through his church in Green Bay!!! Everyone of us was created to be a blessing to others by serving them in very simple and practical ways. What is it that you love to do? What is something you do regularly that others often compliment you on? I'll bet that your greatest abilities are found in there somewhere. What if you used those abilities to serve others?

Now that's something to cheer about!!!

Prayer Changes Me

There are a lot of things that change on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes too much to even keep up with. But think about this....of all the changes that affect us on a daily, monthly, or yearly basis how many of those changes are positive and life changing?

What if it was possible to affect the changes that happen? Would you be willing to do what it takes to see it happen? What if it involved prayer? Sure, we might say we pray but our prayers are usually pretty selfish and self-serving. When is the last time we not only presented our needs but also stopped long enough to let God talk to us in return?

Communication in any relationship is vital. The two key elements are talking & listening. If we only do the former without the later then we've failed at communicating in a way that is mutually beneficial. When God talks it has the potential to change us! No my situations may stay the same, but inside, I can be changed. Most days it feels like there is very little I truly have the ability to control. And while I certainly can't control God or his responses, I've found that every time I take even just a few moments to talk to him and listen, something inside me changes. My attitude, perspective, and emotions almost always take a turn for the better.

Do you want a better day? Do you want a life of hope and peace? Do you want to feel calm in the middle of the storm? Then stop for a just a few minutes several times a day to talk to God. You'll be amazed just how much those prayers change you!

Have a GREAT week!

Be Strong and Courageous

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

Remember those early years in bed at night when suddenly out of know where fear overcame you? Your parents were just down the hall but you were sure there was something in the closet, a monster under the bed, or somebody just outside your window. It was in that moment that you got your first taste of a feeling called fear. While fear is a real feeling those things that we fear aren't nearly as real as they might originally seem. We would all like to believe that we no longer deal with fear like we did as a child but while the focus of our fears might have changed (there really is no monster under your bed ;-) the feeling itself is still very present , very raw,
and very real. But just like earlier in life, the focus of our fear isn't nearly as real as we might believe. It's typically fear itself and the emotions, worry, and stress that turns out to be worse than the feared event, conversation, decision, or situation.

Truth replaces feelings; or at least it should. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God did not give us a spirit of fear, but instead he's given us the ability to have a sound mind instead. Philippians 4:6 tells us not to worry about anything but instead to pray about everything. And when we do this it tells us that we will receive God's unbelievable peace for our hearts and minds.

I encourage you today, don't allow the Devil to use your mind as a playground! Don't allow your feelings to dictate your relationships, attitudes, or week. Be strong and courageous!! God will be with you wherever you go and he is able to give you the strength to make it through whatever life throws at you!

Small Changes = Big Results

Life is an ever changing thing. Just when you think you've got it all figured out, things change. With a new year comes change as well. I've found that it's not always the big changes that produce the biggest results. Often it's the intentional small changes followed by consistency that proves to be most effective.

As you approach 2011, consider what small changes you could make in your family, at work, and in your personal life that could produce tremendous results. It may be more scheduled time with family or a better attitude at work. In your relationship with God, it might be as simple as reading one chapter of the New Testament per day. Even if you only did this 5 days a week you would read the entire N.T. in less than one year. What if you turned the radio off on the ride to work and simply prayed; talked to God just like you would a close friend. How would these small changes impact 2011?

The definition of insanity is: doing the same things over and over again expecting a different result. Add some sanity to your year. Make some small changes and watch the big results happen in 2011!
